Whittier Boat and Tackle

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of boats do you have?
We offer enclosed cabin boats from 22'-30'.   The two owners of Whittier Boat Rental LLC are also own charter businesses so if your situation calls for a charter rather than a rental we  have you covered.  Charter boats include a fast 33' 6 passenger boat, (the largest 6 pack boat in Whittier), a 40' 18 passenger boat, and a 50' 6 passenger boat used exclusively for multiday trips.
How do I make a reservation?
Go to the reservations page and fill out the submission form.  We will contact you by telephone to obtain credit card information.  If you questions before your ready to book, feel free to call or e-mail us first.  We want to make sure you are picking the boat that meets your needs.
How much will it cost?
What equipment comes with the boat?

Rental rates on the reservations page.  In addition to the rental fee you will be paying for fuel, fishing tackle rented, bait and ice.

We provide the most important items you will need. That includes an onboard GPS / fish finder, VHF marine radio, EPIRB, and all US Coast Guard required safety equipment. You will also have laminated hard copy charts, a big net, gas, harpoon, ice chest, and shore dingy in your rental boat.

Is fuel included with the boat rental?

We provide our boats with full tanks. All you need to do is fill the tanks at the end of your rental period. What safety equipment do you provide?

Coast Guard required equipment including life jackets, throwing device, fire extinguisher and signaling devices.   All boats come with a shore dinghy that could be used for flotation in an emergency.  Cell phone service is available in about 50%  of western Prince William Sound and as previously mentioned all boats have VHF radios which allow you to contact the Coast Guard in an emergency.

Do you have optional gear available to rent?
We offer halibut rods, salmon rods, shrimp pots and shrimp pot pullers for rent.  We also sell fishing tackle, bait and ice.

Should we bring our own marine charts?

We have laminated charts. You may want to bring some of your own navigational aids, but we will provide the basics of what you need to find your way in Prince William Sound.

What's the range of your boats?
We have listed the ranges on the "Our Boats" page.  They are using the 1/3 rule - 1/3 out, 1/3 back, 1/3 reserve and are fairly conservative at that.  If the boat is not overloaded, is trimmed properly and you find the most efficient speed and stay there results can be much better.

Do we need to bring a marine radio?

Each boat is equipped with a marine radio. If you will be making shore expeditions, you may want to bring your own handheld unit(s).

What's the travel time from Anchorage to Whittier?
One hour from the southern edge of town if traffic is not heavy.   Entrance into Whittier requires traveling through a one way tunnel. Access is on the half hour entering Whittier and on the hour departing Whittier. Our boats are actually rented based on which tunnel you will be arriving on. If you are already in Whittier, we will meet you on the 1/2 hour.
